Domestic servant, assistant teacher and homemaker. Josephine killed her abusive husband in self-defense in May 1888. The coroner's jury ruled that her husband's death was an act of God and absolved Josephine. Martinez, Mary Clara: Sioux (Pine Ridge, SD) [M. John Lonedog; M. Arthur Woman Dress]. November 1909-February 1910. Enrolled Sioux Indian. Mary's mother was French and Pawnee and her father was Mexican. Housekeeper. Major McLaughlin wrote to HI soon after Mary's arrival asking HI to send her home on account of "it having been discovered that she is infected with venereal disease." Teacher and missionary. Active in numerous church activities. In 1919 Rebecca was appointed Vice-President of the Women's Missionary Society of all Sioux Reservations. Stella graduated from HI in 1908 but remained to take post-graduate work at HI in 1909 and 1910. She received her Teacher's Certificate in 1910. Teacher. The couple's two sons, Fred and Harrison, were born at HI. Poor home record, "that of an Indian woman, partly because of neglect." Pembleton, Louisa: Tuscarora (Tuscarora, NY) [M. Chester A. (Sadigusu=Big Horn Woman): Arikara (Fort Berthold, ND) [M. Mason Jones (HI)]. Arrived at HI at the age of sixteen in June 1898 with a group of Indian pupils brought to HI by Anna Dawson. Fannie returned home in October 1901. After her marriage to Mason Jones, an Arikara from Fort Berthold who attended HI, in 1902 Fannie did missionary work at Fort Berthold. She died in May 1903. *Peters, Bessie: Stockbridge (Green Bay, WI) [M. Charles Reese]. August 1895-October 1900; March 1905 until her graduation in 1908. Bessie was a 1903 Carlisle graduate. Pursued a career as a teacher in the government schools. Peters, Nellie Helena (Tawenemus): Stockbridge (Green Bay, WI) August 1895-June 1899. Nellie continued her studies at Carlisle where she graduated in 1901. Died January 23, 1908. Mary Jane left HI early due to poor health but later graduated from the Santa Fe Indian School in 1897. Teacher. Her husband was a Pima chief. Mary Jane died during childbirth on June 15, 1912. Housekeeper. Amy died in January 1909. Wolfe, Margaret Pearlie: Cherokee (NC) [M. George Toineeta]. October 1903-June 1906. Margaret entered Carlisle in 1906 and stayed until 1911. Assistant seamstress, school matron, domestic servant, and homemaker. Wolfe, Susie Theresa: Chippewa (Reserve, WI) September 1910-May 1912. Indian School employee. Susie also studied to be a nurse. Died September 3, 1917. Wrinkle Face, Ida: Crow (MT) [M. ? Daylight]. September 1903-May 1909. Homemaker. Report in Ida's student file notes: "lives like Indians." Yellow Hair, Edith: Sioux (Cheyenne River, SD) November 1884-1885. Died at HI on November 26, 1885 from phthisis. Buried in the school cemetery. Young, Isabell Matilda: Sioux (Pine Ridge, SD) October 1901-June 1902. Isabell had attended Carlisle for five years prior to enrolling at HI. Store clerk. Died in December 1903. *Young, Lizzie: Wyandot (Quapaw Agency, OK) [M. William Lamoureaux]. October 1888 until graduating from HI in 1891. Stayed at HI for post-graduate studies in 1892. Lizzie left HI to pursue further training at the Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, NH. Teacher, clerk at Grant's Institute in Genoa, NB, and seamstress in a government school.
